Use

When the lights are dim, the LEDs adjust to the luminence of the room to provide an even amount of light, well, to a degree.

I played around with Cheese on Ubuntu to take some sample pictures. I found the quality of the video to be the same on both Windows and Linux. Please remember that this is a 640x480 @ 30 fps webcam, not a high definition movie camera.

I used the camera primarily with Skype for several weeks in both operating systems. My girlfriend said that the quality was indistinguishable between operating systems and that my video was always good and clear. Mission accomplished.

Final Thoughts

I obviously like the Cyber Snipa Scout webcam. I've been using it for nearly six weeks almost nightly and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a rough spot at first when I realized my custom kernel (damned Creative X-Fi driver!) lacked support for the chipset. However, a quick download and compile fixed that.

I can honestly recommend the Cyber Snipa Scout webcam to any user looking for a decently priced webcam—approximately $40 street as of the middle of October 2008.

Pros

  • LEDs light a dark room
  • Highly compatible chipset: works in Windows and Linux
  • Microphone is high quality and separate from the USB.
  • Highly positionable—clips well on top of a beer bottle

Cons

  • Nothing outstanding

Rating: 9/10
